Commercial Driver’s License
- 1/20If applying for a Category C truck license
In Italy, a Category C license is required to operate trucks over 3.5 tonnes, with a minimum age of 21.
When applying for a Category C+E license
C+E allows driving articulated lorries and heavy combinations; you must first pass the C license tests.
If applying for a Category C1 license
Category C1 is available from age 18 and is valid for smaller commercial truck work.
For professional truck driving
The Certificate of Professional Competence (CQC) is mandatory for all commercial truck drivers.
When applying for a CPC
CPC includes road safety, driving law, and load securing training to meet EU Directive 2003/59.
For medical requirements
Italian law requires eyesight, hearing, and general health tests before issuing or renewing a truck license.
If your license expires
Category C licenses are valid for 5 years (3 after age 65); failure to renew means you cannot drive commercially.
For foreign drivers in Italy
Non-EU drivers must exchange their commercial license for an Italian one to work legally.
If operating a truck for hire
Commercial truck insurance must meet Italian and EU minimum coverage standards for liability.
For ADR (hazardous goods) transport
ADR training is required to transport dangerous goods legally and safely in Italy.
If caught driving without a valid CDL
Penalties can exceed €4,000 plus a driving ban until proper licensing is obtained.
For license upgrades
Moving from C1 to C, or C to C+E, requires additional theory and road tests.
If you fail a CDL exam
Italian regulations require a short mandatory wait to allow for further training.
When carrying abnormal loads
Oversized or overweight loads require municipal or regional authorization in Italy.
For night operations
Trucks must have all legal lighting, reflective panels, and warning signs in place for night driving.
If transporting livestock
These rules cover transport duration, rest stops, and vehicle requirements for animal safety.
For probationary CDL holders
New license holders face zero-tolerance alcohol limits and may have speed restrictions.
If your CDL is suspended
Driving with a suspended license can lead to fines of over €5,000 and long-term bans.
When working cross-border
International commercial truck work requires compliance with all jurisdictions’ licensing and rest regulations.
If your medical fitness changes
Failure to report health issues that affect driving may lead to license revocation and liability in accidents.
