Licensing and Insurance
- 1/20If applying for an AM license
The AM license in Italy allows riding mopeds up to 50cc and is available from age 14 with both theory and practical tests.
If applying for an A1 license
The A1 license allows motorcycles up to 125cc and 11 kW, requiring theory and road tests at 16.
If applying for an A2 license
The A2 license permits motorcycles up to 35 kW, with a full theory and practical test.
If applying for a full A license
Full A licenses allow unlimited motorcycle power; progressive access requires 2 years with A2.
If carrying a passenger
Certain lower categories (e.g., AM) may restrict carrying passengers unless specified.
If riding without valid insurance
Italian law mandates third-party liability insurance; riding without it results in fines from €866 to €3,464 and possible seizure.
If insurance has expired
Expired policies lead to the same penalties as having no insurance at all.
If changing motorcycles
Failing to update may void coverage in case of an accident.
If license is suspended
Riding with a suspended license can lead to criminal charges and vehicle confiscation.
If renting a motorcycle
Rental companies require matching license class and valid insurance coverage.
If you hold a foreign motorcycle license
Non-EU licenses must be converted or replaced with an Italian license within 1 year of residency.
If you hold an EU motorcycle license
EU licenses are recognized in Italy but must be renewed in the issuing country’s schedule.
If applying for a motorcycle license
Tests assess road knowledge, safety awareness, and control skills.
If your insurance lapses
Riding uninsured carries fines from €866 to €3,464 plus vehicle impoundment.
If selling your motorcycle
Failure to do so can keep you liable for incidents involving the vehicle.
If lending your motorcycle
Allowing unlicensed riding can result in heavy fines and loss of insurance coverage.
If you modify your motorcycle’s engine
Engine modifications can void insurance if unreported, especially if exceeding license limits.
If you move to a new address
Outdated information can cause delays in renewals and possible penalties.
If involved in an accident
Delayed reporting may result in denial of claims or reduced payouts.
If you cancel your insurance policy early
Cancellation terms depend on your insurer’s policy and contract type.
