Speed Limits and Control
- 1/20If riding in urban areas
In Italian towns and cities, the speed limit is 50 km/h unless otherwise indicated. Lower limits may apply in school zones or high pedestrian areas.
If riding on roads without central divider
On rural roads without a median strip, motorcycles are limited to 90 km/h. Signs may impose lower limits in hazardous areas.
If riding on roads with central divider
On divided rural roads, the maximum speed for motorcycles is 110 km/h unless otherwise posted.
If riding on expressways (superstrade)
Motorcycles can travel up to 110 km/h on expressways outside built-up areas. Reduced limits may apply in tunnels or dangerous curves.
If riding on motorways (autostrade)
On Italian motorways, the limit is 130 km/h in good weather and road conditions.
If riding in rain on motorways
In wet weather, the motorway speed limit drops from 130 km/h to 110 km/h for motorcycles.
If riding in fog with visibility under 100 m
Fog limits visibility, requiring a maximum speed of 50 km/h on all road types in Italy.
If towing a small trailer
When towing a motorcycle trailer, the speed is limited to 80 km/h on roads and 100 km/h on motorways.
If on snow-covered roads
On snow-covered surfaces, Italian law limits motorcycles to 50 km/h regardless of road type.
If in areas with temporary works
Temporary work zones may impose lower limits, usually between 30 to 50 km/h, for safety.
If approaching pedestrian crossings
Italian law requires motorcyclists to reduce speed near crossings to avoid endangering pedestrians, often under 30 km/h.
If entering a residential zone
Many residential streets in Italy are “Zona 30,” limiting vehicles to 30 km/h for safety.
If riding near schools during active hours
School zones often impose a 30 km/h limit during arrival and dismissal times.
If road signs indicate a lower limit
Local signage can impose limits below the national maximums, and these must be followed.
If overtaking on rural roads
While overtaking is allowed, speed must remain within the posted limit for that road type.
If approaching sharp curves
Italian rules require slowing down before curves, especially on mountainous and coastal roads.
If passing through tunnels
Many tunnels in Italy set an 80 km/h maximum speed for motorcycles for safety.
If riding with low tire pressure
Lower tire pressure can affect handling; Italian regulations require reducing speed to maintain control.
If carrying a passenger
The extra weight affects braking distance, so speed should remain within safe and legal limits.
If using winter tires in summer
Certain winter tires are rated for lower maximum speeds, and this limit must be respected.
